polyglycolic acid is a crystalline polymer with a crystallinity of 46 ~ 52%, a density of 1.5~1.64g/cm3, a glass transition temperature of about 36 ℃, a melting point of about 224 ℃, and good mechanical properties of high molecular weight polyglycolic acid. Because polyglycolic acid is a dense crystalline polymer, it is almost insoluble in all organic solvents except hexafluoroisopropanol.
Due to its excellent mechanical properties and biodegradable properties, polyglycolic acid (PGA) has been applied in many fields such as tissue engineering scaffolds, drug sustained-release carriers, barrier materials, etc.
The synthesis of PGA usually adopts a two-step open loop method, that is, glycolic acid is first made into glycolide, and then the glycolide is opened to make PGA. Another reported method is melt/solid phase Polycondensation method, that is, the oligomer is first prepared in the molten state, and then the oligomer is crushed and then subjected to solid phase polycondensation. PGA with high relative molecular mass is prepared by this method.
The original raw material of polyglycolic acid is glycolic acid, which is widely found in nature, especially sugar cane, sugar beet and immature grape juice. Because of the difficulty of separation and purification, it is currently obtained through organic synthesis in industry.
Polyglycolic acid is a kind of thermoplastic linear polyglycolic acid, which has certain processability and can be extruded, injected, spun and blown with general equipment. Polyglycolic acid is a synthetic polymer material with good biodegradability and biocompatibility. Unlike traditional polymer materials with stable performance, such as plastics and rubber, polyglycolic acid is used as a material. After a certain period of time, it gradually degrades and eventually becomes water and nitrogen that is harmless to human body, animals and plants and the natural environment. The application of polyglycolic acid is mainly manifested in biomedicine and ecology.
